New Program: Specialist in digital sovereignity

Malmö Yrkeshögskola and Stockholms Yrkeshögskola have applied to launch a new vocational training program starting in 2026—Specialist in Digital Sovereignty. The program is proposed as a two-year distance learning course.

“The transfer of data between the EU and the US has become increasingly challenging due to tighter regulations and legal decisions. At the same time, US authorities can request data from US-owned providers, further eroding customers’ control over their information,” says Claes Magnusson, vice-principal.

Digital sovereignty—the ability to maintain control over one’s data and digital services—has become a priority for businesses, governmental agencies, and organizations. Politicians, business leaders, and IT decision-makers all recognize the importance of swiftly finding European alternatives to US IT and cloud services.

“European businesses have rapidly adopted American solutions in cloud services, AI, and data management due to convenience and technological advantages. However, with increasing demands for data security and privacy, companies and organizations need to reassess their technological choices,” continues Claes Magnusson.

This transition will create opportunities for Swedish and European systems to evolve, reducing dependency on American solutions while boosting innovation capacity in Sweden and across Europe.

“There is a significant business need for skilled specialists who can practically assess existing digital services and recommend effective European or open-source alternatives based on security, cost, performance, and regulatory compliance criteria,” concludes Claes Magnusson.

Once approved, the program will be tuition-free, like university studies in Sweden, and eligible for student financial support, including Sweden’s new support for transition and retraining.
